Tales of the Abyss Playthrough #1

I am beginning my replay for Tales of the Abyss! Last time I began a replay, I took many notes, but never finished. I am now going to streamline/add-to those notes as I go and post them in Luke’s journal at Aather. This will be more as a reference source for script bits, interesting facts, fon-science facts, character observation and so on, and less me squealing over things.

Baticul, Fabre Manor

-ND2000 In Kimlasca shall be born one who inherits the power of Lorelei. He will be a boy with royal blood and hair of red. He will be called Light of the Sacred Flame and he will lead Kimlasca-Lanvaldear to glory.

ND2002 The one who would seize glory shall destroy the island upon which he was born. A land by the name of Hod. War shall then persist between Kimlasca and Malkuth for a full cycle of the seasons.

-Game starts on: Remday, Rem-Decan 23, ND2018

-There is a balcony outside Luke’s room with a table and two chairs, he probably ate breakfast here.

-The King is actually the one that ordered Luke to not leave the manor.

-The Order of Lorelei Maestro, Dorian General Van Grants.

-Ramdas is concerned about Luke fraternizing with the servants. Luke is friendly with Pere too.

-Lorelei calls Luke a "fragment of his soul" and has apparently been causing Luke headaches since he born. However it’s become more frequent. This raises a question though: At the time, Van had not captured Lorelei, so why was Lorelei trying so hard to get ahold of him?

-Ion's predecessor is Evenos. He ended the Hod War.

-Van is really very good at sounding as if he is a nice guy who truly cares about his student.

-Duke Fabre and Susanne are an amazing juxtaposition. “LUKE QUIT BEING A BRAT” “DARLING DON’T ASK SO MUCH OF HIM YOU KNOW HOW HARD HIS LIFE HAS BEEN”.

-Guy and Luke apparently spar a lot. No surprise since sword practice is ‘the only thing keeping him sane’.

-Luke didn't make much of an effort to learn about the world. He knows what the Hod War is (more or less?) as well as Malkuth, since he doesn't ask about those. But he doesn't know what a Fon Master is.

-Duke Fabre does say he is sorry to keep Luke locked up.

-When Van mentions "leaving everything to [Guy]" he goes on with "The Duke, the King, and Luke's--". Makes me wonder what plans they had beyond just staying under their noses.

-Luke got a premonition of Tear's arrival. I... don't think this ever repeats?

-Tear why can’t you put an entire estate asleep when it is useful.

-It looks like the only reason Luke and Tear teleported is because they clashed at the same time Lorelei was contacting Luke, so he was halfway hyperresonating already.

Tataroo Valley

-Regarding the teleportation, Tear says “I almost thought we’d be caught in the Planet Storm”. I wonder if other arte related glitches sometimes happen?

-Even this early Luke does brush off injury pretty easily.

-A hyperresonance is a 'isofon-induced resonance'. And since Luke is a perfect isofon with the Seventh Fonon... I suppose that's how they explain it away in the game. Nevermind that people using seventh fonons on Luke doesn't do anything like that later on.

-Tear mentions that his family is probably protecting him because he’s a Seventh Fonist. Is it supposed to be that rare? Hard to gauge when there are… five in the main cast.

-For MY OWN FUTURE REFERENCE. You change who you are battling with by hitting ‘start’ within the menu during battle.

Engeve

-Mounts are some sort of lizard/armadillo thing.

-The Tartarus classifies as a 'land dreadnaught'.

-The Tartarus has technology to sense fon slots being activated. It can even sense what fonon is being used.

-Luke isn't at all hesitant to admit when he doesn't know anything early on. Infact he uses it as a kind of crutch. "I don't know! It's not my fault I've been shut up all my life." Which. While whiny, is fair enough.

-Tear lets Luke get arrested because it will do him some good.

-Colonel Jade Curtiss, Third Division, Malkuth Imperial Forces.

-Tear stops Luke from using his full name, citing that there are plenty of people in Malkuth who have had family killed by Luke’s father. We don’t get to see Luke’s reaction to this. However, it reminds us that Tear is one such person, at least in a way. Her father and mother were lost in the Hod war, which Duke Fabre was a major player in. However she never seems to have Guy’s reaction, nor does it ever come up as a guilt factor for Luke. Fair enough, since she never actually lived in Hod, or knew either of her parents, and was raised in the zen-like community of Yulia City. Still, it’s interesting that she says it like that, and I think she does realize that includes her.

Cheagle Woods

-Locrian Sergeant Tear Grants. 1st Platoon, Oracle Knights Intelligence Division.

-Save points are called 'memory circles'.

-I basically always flip out when Ion appears, because of what a different range of emotions he gets out of Luke. Here we finally get to see Luke be protective, aware of others' weaknesses, and kind. He just… displays it in a terrible way. You only have to be an ultra patient jesus like Ion to get the best out of Luke.

-Interestingly, Ion doesn’t take the moral argument when Luke says he doesn’t give a crap if Engeve is attacked by ligers. He points out that Engeve ships food everywhere, including Kimlasca. He doesn’t even appear affronted by Luke’s selfishness. I think these are the moments were we really see that Ion doesn’t feel much, and is pretty detached from the world. He takes his duty very seriously, and his duty is to be kind and a source of hope, but he doesn’t really connect to a lot of things.

-Capacity cores are accessories with fonic artes applied. The fonic arte inscribed determines which abilities go up.

-Jade's level fourty-five when he appears.

-Yulia Jue made the pact with the Cheagles 2000 years ago. I imagine that has to do with the start of the calendar.

Tartarus

-Fonstones are created when the score is read. Daath must be fucking rich.

-Luke didn’t know what fonstones were, other than ‘those rocks in the sky’. So clearly fonstones aren’t used that commonly in a household setting, and also Guy taught Luke zero things about fontech.

-To cast a Fonic Arte you "Take fonons from the fon belt into your body and then collide your fonon frequency with their own, generating special power". I don't blame Luke for not getting it.

-The fon belt is the layer of fonstones that surrounds the planet, there are six elements. By opening the body's fon slots, it draws in fonons and then you join them together using a fon verse.

-It appears as if, in theory, anyone can cast fonic artes. However, it’s very difficult, and certainly some people are more adapt at it than others. It seems like only the Seventh Fonon is exclusive in who can use it.

-Ion recognized from the beginning that Luke felt 'familiar'.

-Jade's suspected Luke of being a replica from the moment he heard about his memory loss.

-The Cheagles taught Yulia the art of controlling the seventh fonon. I assume this translates to "how to read the score".

-They use the metric system on Auldrant.

-Colonel Jade Curtiss, Commander of the Third Division of the Malkuth Imperial Forces. Jade the Necromancer.

-Asch wanted to kill Luke (and Tear? Knowing who Tear is?). O Asch. When Legretta reminds him that it's against orders, we get that glowy "Loralei is talking" sound and he changes his mind.

-Luke might suck at everything else, but he has a natural, innate sense of the value of life.

-In his own way, Jade eases up on Luke once he finds out his reasons for being scared to fight. It's rather cute.

-Luke doesn’t know what fonstones are, but he knows what gunpowder is…

-Legretta didn’t even notice that they had captured Tear, even though she was there when Asch wanted to kill them. Way to not be observant.

-I never thought about it, but in this scene when they fight Legretta and try to rescue Ion, Luke only uses Mieu as a weapon, and gives up when a guard draws a sword on him. I always got distracted by how funny weapon!Mieu is, but it’s actually Luke’s way of trying to avoid killing anyone, which is adorable.

-Jade turns away from Legretta as soon as guy jumps from a million feet up, well before he lands. Jade clearly has some sort of inherent respect for Guy’s ability to do everything.

-A hundred and fourty soldiers on the Tartarus when it was captured. Half the usual number. All dead.

Field, Rugnica Plains

-“Luke’s Grand Adventure” skit.

-Luke says "N-no more." at the end battle sequence when he first has to try to kill someone. Aww. (And then Jade says to 'finish him' and Luke can't and Tear gets hurt protecting him. Aww.)

-Luke calls Tear on ‘just trying to sound tough’ for wanting to protect everyone. Also ‘weird’.

-Jade offers that they will protect Luke until they get to Baticul, and assures that there is no shame in running and saving your own life. Despite that he says it in that condescending voice of his, I think he'd being pretty genuine.

-Guy is the first person to recognize outright that being tossed out into the world might be tough on Luke.

-Outside of town, killing people isn’t a crime, as long as it isn’t for personal malice. Auldrant is a little cut throat.

-When Luke asks how many people Guy has killed, Guy says "who knows?" so I imagine despite leaving in the manor he's probably spent his fair share of time outside. I imagine he typically only would kill bandits though, on travels.

-Tear is always waking Luke up. I guess he tends to sleep in.

-Luke mentions that he only writes in his diary so that his mom and the other won't worry. That's rather cute.

-Tear really gets in Luke’s face to make sure he understand the responsibility of choosing to kill. For once Luke actually does.

-“Kill or Be Killed…” skit.

-“Is Anise Alright…” skit.

-“Melodists” skit.
