Memory Eight - Pos Sig
Talking to Master Van in jail
Sharable, shape of stone
5:00 - END and START to 2:00
Van: There's no one here now but us, so I want you to stay calm, and listen to what I have to say.
Luke: Huh?
V: Luke, will you join me as a member of the Oracle Knights.
L: What are you talking about?
V: You probably assume this trip to Akzeriuth is a simple matter. But in fulfilling that role, you will become Kimlasca's pet dog. Trapped on a leash in Baticul for the rest of your life.
L: Why? You're the one who told me I would become free if I became a hero!
V: But going to Akzeriuth won't do. You heard Yulia Jue's Score, did you not?
L: Yeah, it said I'd bring prosperity to Kimlasca and stuff.
V: The Score continues: "The youth will turn power to calamity and be as a weapon of Kimlasca". Those in the upper ranks of the Order believe you will bring war to the Rugnica Plains.
L: Me? Bring war? That's ridiculous!
V: Yulia's Score has never been wrong. Not once. I want to save you before you're used for wear!
L: But what should I do...? If I don't go to Akzeriuth, those people will be in trouble!
V: This is what the Score says: You will take the people of Akzeriuth and move them away. As a result, war will break out. So what you must do is remove the miasma, without moving the citizen of Akzeriuth.
L: The miasma is that poison stuff, right? How can I do that?
V: Cause a hyperresonance, and neutralize the miasma, after that, you can run away with me to Daath. With that, war will be averted, and you'll obtain your freedom.
L: I wonder if I can. I don't know if I can cause a hyperresonance on my own.
V: I'll help you, like I did on board the ship when I calmed your hyperresonance.
L: Okay, I'll try.
V: You mustn't tell anyone about this plan until right before we put it into action. Especially anyone from Kimlasca. If they were to learn, you would lose your chance to escape to Daath.
L: Master... how come you're so nice to me?
V: Ah, that's right. That was lost with the rest of your memory.
L: Did I say something before?
V: When you were young, you told me you wanted to go to Daath with me. You underwent cruel experiments for the purpose of hyperresonance research, and you wanted to run away from this country. That's why, on that day seven years ago, I kidnapped you.
L: YOU kidnapped me?! Not Malkuth?!
V: This time, I won't fail. I need you.
L: That's the first time anyone's ever told me they needed me. You're the only one who's ever praised me and scolded me and taken me seriously. Master... I'll join you!
V: Good. Then let's be going, to seize your future!
L: Yeah!
What He Learned:
What He Gained:
So basically! This is a Sig-Pos memory that retroactively is a Sig Neg. The first time you play the game this scene is SUPER SKEEZY because it is CLEARLY SUSPICIOUS VAN who is telling a little boy EVERYTHING HE WANTS TO HEAR and they are going to RUN AWAY together and all you have to do is do this SECRET PLAN WITH ME and NOT TELL ANYONE. But! At this point in the game everything against Van is total hearsay. So there is still a bit of MAYBE HE ISN'T THAT BAD, OR MAYBE IT'S ALL A MISUNDERSTANDING.
A few hours later Van uses the trigger word 'Foolish Replica Luke' to force Luke to destroy a town and kill thousands of people, then leaves him to die. And that isn't even the only terrible thing Van does to Luke. Really Van sort of systemically crushes Luke's attempts to have an identity at every turn and he has to rise above it!
Right now Luke is still lacking a lot of his 'rising above' means, so this memory is just horrible and incredibly depressing. It is still a 'good' memory in the sense that he feels really happy about Van's offer, he really trusts him. He wants to be together with him and is afraid of his father locking him up foreeeverrr and never being free. Van is his HERO and Luke is effectively a little kid. It is like if Spiderman was all LOOK I LOVE YOU AND WANT TO TAKE CARE OF YOU FOREVER AND WE WILL LEAVE THIS WRETCHED LAND I JUST NEED TO DELIVER SOME PACKAGES FOR ME AND NOT TELL ANYONE ABOUT IT =) You would be like fuck yeah okay Spiderman you are a national icon you would never be asking me to do anything terrible and THEN WE CAN LEAVE TOGETHER AND BE HAPPILY EVER AFTER kya.
Only then it was a lie and instead you were delivering C4 and you blew up a city and everything was terrible forever.
Luke knows enough about what happens later that in a way he can 'appreciate' how clever Van was. He knows know Van was just telling him what he wanted to hear. He has NO idea how much of any of it is true. Was he really experimented on? Why/how did he lose his memory? Was Van really the one who kidnapped him? Is there any risk of a war at all, does his father really want one, or does Van?
All in all, this memory didn't give him a lot in the way of answers. Just a very painful wound that is reopened and he has to wait for it to scar over again.
However! He HAS decided to continue to take his memories. Though he won't hurry through them or anything. He isn't up to taking the memory from the last game yet, but he won't try to leave it until forever. Konatsu SUCCESSFULLY BROKE HIM into 'I deserve whatever suffering I get' mode.

What He Learned:
- Wow, Van is really an amazing liar
- And I'm amazing gullible
- But he really was the only one to ever mentor me...
- M...maaay have been used for research experiments?
- Lost my memory...?
- Was definitely convinced being locked up forever was a possibility
- Stuff about the Score (it's always right, it predicts even terrible things like war)
- No one's ever told me they needed me before
What He Gained:
+ 300 baw Van
- EVEN MORE self worth
- 45 gullibility
